This shallow decorative copper plate is approximately 12" wide & depicts a design of a bear with a salmon in it's mouth. This plate designed by Kwakiutl artist Harold Alfred from Alert Bay, B.C. and created using metalsmith techniques by Adolf Oetter.
The powerful bear is recognized by its huge nostrils, short snout and ears. The Elder Kinsman, he teaches the legends and dances. Bear is always respected and treated as a high ranking guest. The salmon in the Bear's jaws symbolises the life source, as a provider of food for all animals and humans. Salmon is a symbol of fertility, immortality and wealth.
