This shallow decorative copper plate is approximately 12" wide & depicts a design of a otter mother with baby. This plate designed by Kwakiutl artist Harold Alfred from Alert Bay, B.C. and created using metalsmith techniques by Adolf Oetter.
This playful sea mammal with rich fur is often associated with the Shaman. In native legend, the otter was also a dispenser of great riches. Early European fur traders nearly hunted the sea otter to extinction in their quest for its valuable pelt.
Copper symbolized great wealth and prestige for the owner and was an integral part of ceremonial life. It was used at Potlatches and was also used as currency. It was believed to have magical properties that affected human health as well as symbolizing light, salmon and other elements basic to life.
